The name Imbokodo, “rock” in isiZulu, was inspired by the 1956 protest march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria by more than 20 000 women singing freedom songs. ‘Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo’ - (You strike a woman, you strike a rock.) The attempt on her life when she was on her way to school led to her native Pakistan to pass that nation’s first Right to Education Bill.
